Continuing with the trend of writing about food (we all gotta eat, right?), I found a post in the NYTimes Well on The 11 Best Foods You Aren’t Eating.
Why is this important to me? Well, for starters, I’m a college student. We have all heard of and/or experienced the dreaded and almost unavoidable “freshman 15.” This is largely due to laziness, lack of exercise, bad foods, bad eating habits, and of course, stress. I have never been a healthy eater, and I used to love midnight snacks (I still do, actually). And these two things went conveniently well together at MIT. Student center and dining hall foods are fast and mostly unhealthy, and I rarely ever went to bed before 3am.
I’ve learned to eat better over the past 3 years. And this summer I am home alone. No parents to cook for me, and my mom calls me everyday to tell me to eat veggies and fruits (I’m a big fan of steak and the like). So after seeing Zoelle’s post on the importance of eating seasonal foods, and Jon’s link to Slow Food Nation, I decided to perhaps change my eating habits for the summer as well.
Topping the list of “11 Best Foods” is, get this, beets. Which is one of few foods I absolutely do not like. But as I scrolled down the list, the amount of delicious choices started to make me salivate. It includes things such as cinnamon, pomegranate, plums, and blueberries. The list also explains why each food is good for you and suggestions on how to eat it. Unlike other healthy food lists, these are all things you can find in your local grocery store. You can bet the next time I go food shopping at least one of these will make it into my shopping cart.
